WHAT IS ACETYLCHYSTEINE (NAC)?
ACETILCISTEIN is an N-acetylated derivative of the "sulphur" amino acid cysteine.
It presents an antioxidant and mucolytic activity, thus playing a fundamental role in the fight against skin aging. NAC eliminates free radicals, formed by lipid peroxidation, which would otherwise cause the breakdown of cell membranes leading to degeneration and biochemical dysfunction (impact on DNA and RNA).
HOW DOES ACETYLCHYSTEINE WORK ON THE SKIN?
The first mechanism of action is the one that is exploited for the mucolytic action, that is the ability to split sulfide bridges: Acetyl Cysteine is in fact able to break the protein molecules, to reduce them in size thus facilitating exfoliation at the epidermal level.
The second mechanism is the antioxidative process: acetylchysteine carries cysteine, the most powerful free radical deactivator. This allows the cell to better withstand all types of stress.
